Coir Doormats - 100% Handwoven

What is Coir and How is it Made?

Coir, a versatile natural fibre, is derived from the husk of coconuts, which is the part between the outer hard shell and the actual coconut. The process of making coir begins with harvesting mature coconuts primarily from coastal regions where coconut palms are abundant. These husks are then soaked in water for several months, which is known as retting. This helps to soften them and loosens the fibres, making them easier to extract.

After retting, the fibres are separated from the rest of the husk through a process called decortication, where mechanical means are employed to beat the husk. The fibres are then washed, dried, and sorted based on quality and length. Coir is known for its durability, moisture resistance, and antimicrobial properties, making it ideal for outdoor products.

Coir Door Mat

The manufacturing of coir doormats involves twisting the fibres into yarns and then weaving or tufting these yarns into coir doormats. These doormats are highly valued for their natural coarse texture, which effectively scrapes dirt and debris off shoes.

Environmentally Friendly Coir Doormat

Coir mats are biodegradable and environmentally friendly, appealing to eco-conscious consumers. Their rugged texture and ability to withstand high foot traffic make them a popular choice for placement at entrances, where they provide a practical yet aesthetic function.

Outdoor Door Mat

One of the many reasons that coir works so well for outdoor doormats is that it is a durable and hardy material which can take quite a lot of rubbing of shoes without getting damaged. The classic coir doormat can also be dyed or painted with a variety of words and emblems.
